Timonkey

Got this album a while ago purely because I am a massive fan of Muti records, I gave it a quick listen and wasn't that impressed probably because I was after some more upbeat stuff similar to Heyoka or Mimosa. I came back to it a couple of weeks ago and couldn't believe I'd dismissed it at first listen. It's an awesome, laid back hip-hop/dubstep album with some intricate glitchy beats thrown in there.

Here's a download for you all thanks to some dude on funkysouls forum: Timonkey - Cerulea

Dubstep II

Yesterday I promised some more interesting dubstep. For me this is the most exciting side of the genre at the moment, there have been tons of great releases in the last year or so from labels such as Warp, Hessle Audio and Planet Mu which have really been pushing the boundaries of dubstep.

First up is James Blake, a man who seems to be able to do no wrong on evidence of his releases so far. Signed up on Hessle Audio here are a few of my favourite tracks.

Golden Brown

Ok I don't know why I hadn't heard this before, I guess I need to get listening to more James Brown.

The Stuyvesants

The Stuyvesants

The Stuyvesants consist of a music producer and a record collector from Brooklyn, New York. They say they wanted their name to pay homage to the 70's which makes sense considering the particularly soulful brand of hip-hop created on their album Brooklyn's Finest. The album has a very warm feeling to it making great use of grainy vocal samples and keeping the beats as smooth as Barry White's bottom. Definatley worth a listen especially seeing as you can grab it FREE here.

Personal favourite tracks include Brooklyn's Finest, Coming Around and After Rain. You can grab t-shirts or show them love at their website http://thestuyvesants.com/

Dubstep

So dubstep has been around for a good while now and has become ridiculously massive in the last year or two. It's been in the most part great for the scene with loads of sick club nights, new producers and different styles, dubstep has gone from being a pretty limited sound to being hugely varied, the housey stabs of Joy Orbison being a million miles away from the filthy synths of producers such as Borgore or Shekel. The downside of this explosion into the mainstream is the sheer volume of boring samey music coming out, most of it designed for money making and club nights full of people who will shout at you for looking at their kebab the wrong way to impress 'some fit bird' in a mini skirt and half a jar of foundation.

Anyway...here's a few tracks I'm feeling at the moment, bangers for today, if its all abit too dirty and mindless for you then check tomorrow I'll post some more soulful dubstep.

The Beginning

Well, I decided to start a music blog seeing as a I have a lot of time on my hands during my gap year. It seems silly to even post anything seeing as I have officially zero readership but you gotta start somewhere. The site looks really bad at the moment but I will work on that once I get to grips with things. Will be posting tracks or events that I'm feeling at the time, I'm not a great writer so content is likely to be short and not so sweet but I can guarantee quality of music will be high. Expect regular free (legal) downloads.

To start us off I have to mention the Ninja Tune XX release this month, a box set bursting with quality celebrating 20 years of the label. Ninja Tune have always been at the forefront of electronic music with long term signings such as Mr. Scruff and Coldcut. If you haven't already the order it at the Ninja Tune shop. Preview on the Soundcloud below.
